Colours of Vietnam – Black
For some, black is an absence of colour. For others, it’s a backdrop to make colours pop.
Black can be as mysterious and as beautiful as the night. Here are a few of my black snaps from Vietnam.
Black snacks. A bag of beef jerky contrasts with bags of dried shrimp at a tiny wet market in Ho Chi Minh City …
Black H’Mong. A beautiful Black H’Mong lady in the market in Sapa in northern Vietnam. (Darling Man looked at this photo and said “cheap camera” but I still love this shot. It’s from late 2007 and it was taken with a little Sony point-and-shoot.)
Black plastic. Motorbikes in Vietnam are mostly plastic. My motorbike is black and red, as was the newspaper used to wrap the roses I bought for Darling Man and Miss M on the way home ….
Long black. Black coffee with ice. And a fair amount of sugar. Tasty morning black ….
Clean black. Black gloves worn by a street sweeper lady …
Fancy black. Little black jacket on show at a snazzy little local boutique …
Black feet. Black footed chicken on sale at a market in the Mekong Delta …
Blackboard chat. Satisfying expat expectations in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 2 …
Lonely black. A black-clad monk walking in the coloured sand dunes of Mui Ne …
Snail black. Perfume snails at a little restaurant we happen to know …
Black silhouette. A misty morning on the shores of Xuan Huong lake in Dalat …
Sweet black. The Vietnamese bánh flan, known in English as creme caramel. Served with a bittersweet black chocolate sauce and ice.

I’m really interested in that flan! It’s so cool to see things from other cultures pop up in other countries. I’m so used to Mexican or Spanish flan.
I would travel just for flan. After I win the lotto, of course. 🙂
Black is my favorite color. Although the chicken feet are a little disturbing.

The bones are black too … a kind of blue-ish black, which is also a little disturbing.
I was in Vietnam years ago and still remember that awesome black coffee (it does need lots of sugar though.) 🙂

I LOVE the coffee-with-condensed milk, Dave. But that didn’t fit into the theme of this post! The black coffee is fantastic as well.
A good collection of B & W. The creme caramel is strange. I love the weird and wonderful foods of vietnam.
