It’s A Boy!
The wait is finally over, the baby is here!
He arrived 10 minutes into the Year of the Horse, 31 (mostly boring) hours after being induced.
He was born “watching the stars”, according to our lovely German midwife, an expression she translated from her native language for babies born facing up rather than down. In another culture, this might have earned him the name Stargazer. But my Western sensibilities cringe at the thought of giving someone a name that’s a constant reminder of the relationship between their face and their mother’s bits.
Still, I love having a “watching the stars” baby. He’s obviously somewhat of a rebel from the get-go.
When the midwife placed him on my chest, all mucky and angry, the first thing I did was open his tiny little hands to check his palm creases. Seeing more than one was such a huge relief after so many months of worrying about the possibility of Down Syndrome.
Only after checking his hands did I look over the rest of him. Lots of hair, long feet and a slightly off-centre circular bruise on his forehead. It was purple and puffy, with deep forehead wrinkles, making him look like a tiny beat-up Klingon.
We named him Avery SÆ¡n. Darling Man wanted a “strong” name for him because of all the stressful (and stupid) medical advice we were given early on. The name Avery means “wise” and SÆ¡n (rhymes with urn) is a Chinese-Vietnamese name that means “mountain”. We can’t register the Æ¡ on his Australian birth certificate, so his middle name will look like Son. Which, naturally, makes Boney M’s Sunny his theme song. All in all, quite a good deal as far as a name goes.
Of course, I will have to give him the same privacy arrangement I gave his big sister and use a pseudonym on the blog. How does Sunny sound?
He’s six days old now and it seems like we’ve always been a family of four. Miss M is besotted with her new baby brother. She could spend hours crouched over him talking loudly about his chubby cheeks and chubby nose and chubby arms. She can’t wait for him to grow big enough to play with her.

Thanks Nicole. Now he’s named, it really suits him. And he is quite a sunny little fella.
The name is perfect!!!!! Avery is a lovely name. It’s the name of the street we live off – shall I steal you the sign?? ð
Thanks Bethaney! Maybe you could just take a photo of the sign for me. I don’t want to cart a street sign around with us when we travel.
Congrats! He’s beautiful! My nephew’s name is Avery. Good choice. ð

Thanks Dalene. Part of the appeal of the name Avery was that neither Darling Man nor I have ever met an Avery! Choosing names is hard when you’ve met so many people during your lifetime!!!
Yay! Congratulations! What a little cutie!

Thanks Sally. When are you going to come back to Vietnam to meet him properly? (I am just SO SUBTLE, aren’t I?)
Congrats. Love the names, my son was a stargazer too … never thought of it as being his reflective of his rebellious streak, only thought of it as the reason for a c-section, so thank you for that positive spin! Enjoy the first precious days.

Thanks Karen. No c-section here, luckily. Our stargazer was in a normal position until he came out! Is your boy a rebel?
Our boy rarely does what he is told – but he is of that age (four and a half)! He was born in the Netherlands, and the term for stargazer there is “sterrenkijker”. We now enjoy life in Tanzania, where they all seem to love a rebel!

I am so happy for you, and that all that medical sh… came out for nothing (didn’t we just know that?) While I am still counting the last days of my pregnancy, please give Sunny a kiss on his perfect forehead from Germany – and tell me where you got a German midwife in Australia??

Thanks Jenny! We were just lucky to get Sylvia von Deutschland assigned to us that night. She emigrated to Australia 13 years ago and she was amazing. Can you tell me what the original German term is for “watching the stars”? Sylvia told me but I immediately forgot and the words that Google Translate throws up don’t seem as poetic as what she said.
Well, of course: It’s “Sternengucker” – to be translated as “he who watches the stars”, but the term for “watching” (gucken) indicates a rather childlike or colloquial way to do it. And it is exclusively used in describing this birthing position, anyone else watching the stars would be an “Astronom” (astronomist) ð
Wonderful!! I love how she’s already keeping him up! Congratulations!

Oh, it’s lucky that he’s such a relaxed baby, all the attention he’s getting from his big sister doesn’t bother him at all — or wake him up! Waiting for the competition has been a bit of a stressful time for Miss M. Now he’s arrived, I am so glad she decided to love him to death rather than regard him as a rival for her parents’ attention.
All that worry and now a beautiful baby boy. Avery Son is a wonderful name. And Sunny is a happy name. I look forward to hearing about him in the future. Well Done!

All that worry … yes. And a difficult pregnancy. So far Darling Man’s prediction has been correct — a difficult pregnancy = an easy baby. (Flipping the previous experience of an easy pregnancy and a not-so-easy baby.)
Congratulations Barbara and Vu.
My partner Raf and I did your snail street tour with Vu in September last year and for some reason, this morning he popped in my head and I wondered if your baby had been born.
I am so so pleased that everything has turned at well for your beautiful new baby boy.
Please pass our best wishes to Vu – we had such a great night with him.
Congratulations once again :-))
I’m a bit late but Congratulations. He is just beautiful. I’m sure Miss M is a wonderful helper. Love to you all. xxx
Wow! I’m so happy for you girl! I am sure the long wait of having him inside you for 9 months was definitely worth it!
